ALA and TLA Student Chapter Co-Director

From December 2012 to December 2013 I was a co-director of the UT School of Information's Student Chapter of the American Library Association and Texas Library Association. During my tenure as co-director I was responsible for leading meetings, planning events, and managing the chapter's budget. I strived to encourage philanthropy and involvement in professional organizations among UT School of Information students, and my fellow co-directors and I hosted many events designed to meet those goals. Below are some examples of our philanthropy and social events.
Martin Middle School Literacy Night
Together with Carmen Williams, the Martin Middle School Librarians, and my fellow ALA and TLA Student Chapter Co-directors, I planned and hosted a literacy night at Martin Middle School that was designed to emphasize the importance of literacy to the students and their families. Storytelling, crafting, and Nook stations were created which entertained and educated students. I was responsible for designing marketing materials and staffing the Nook station.

Welcome Week Event Planning
As part of my responsibilities as an ALA and TLA Student Chapter Co-Director, I was involved in planning and hosting Welcome Week events at the beginning of the Spring 2013 and Fall 2013 semesters. Some of the events I've planned include a tour of the UT School of Information building, Food Trucks and Dancing, Bats and Drinks, and Gone to Texas. The images below show students enjoying these events!

Caught Reading Banned Books
This event was designed to highlight the importance of intellectual freedom, and coincided with Banned Books Week in September of 2009. Participants selected banned or challenged books, and took mug shots with a sign that read "Caught Reading Banned Books." This was the most successful ALA and TLA Student Chapter event to date: over 30 students and faculty members participated, and the photo album on Facebook was viewed 882 times.
